Esophageal varices 

Esophageal varices are extremely dilated sub-mucosal veins in the lower third of the esophagus. Mostly seen in cirrhotic patients. People with esophageal varices have tendency to develop blood vomtimg and ot black stool due to bleeding from varices can be fatal.

Therapeutic endoscopy is considered the mainstay of urgent treatment. The two main therapeutic approaches are endoscopic variceal band ligation (EBL/EVL) and sclerotherapy.
